Draconians – Dragonlance nexus

Portrait of all 5 draconian races of Ansalon for the Dragonlance Nexus. Give some love to these scaly boys that get kicked around repeatedly by the Heroes of the Lance!

Baaz: brass, short and stocky; Bozak, bronze enchanter; Kapak, sly copper thief; Aurak, golden arcane and majestic and the big boy silver Sivak!

Created for the first edition of the manual “Tasslehoff’s pouches of Everything”, now at its second edition on DM Guild.

draconians by elena zambelli greenedera

The great fantasy artists of the past decades painted the 5 races of draconians in various possible forms; for this portrait, I used as reference for the shape of the different races the miniatures of the 80s and Keith Parkinson’s beautiful painting of the draconians in the snow: these are the paintings I grew up admiring. Getting the chance to paint them for the Dragonlance Nexus was a dream come true, and the beginning of a wonderful collaboration.

The Baaz draconian

“Baaz Draconians are the smallest of their brethren, made from Brass Dragon eggs, and are commonly used as ground troops. They are usually of chaotic alignment and as a result are interested in getting what is best for them individually. Baaz wear disguises often, concealing their wings and scales underneath large hoods and masks when traveling through non-draconian lands. When a Baaz is killed, its body turns to stone, trapping whatever weapon killed it within the baaz’s stony corpse. After a short time, the petrified body crumbles to dust.” From dragonlance.fandom.com/wiki

The Aurak draconian

“The Aurak Draconians are among the most powerful of draconians, and were originally used as special agents of the Dragon Highlords because of their intelligence, cunning and magical abilities which they inherited from their Gold Dragon parents. Auraks stand approximately 7 feet tall, with thin limbs and no wings.” from dragonlance.fandom.com/wiki

The Sivak draconian

“Sivak Draconians are the only “true” draconians who are capable of flight; they are second to Aurak Draconians in power (among the true draconians), and were created from the eggs of Silver Dragons” They generally attack with huge two-handed swords, but can also use their claws and/or armored tails. In addition to flight, sivaks have a unique (but limited) ability to shape-shift. When a sivak kills a humanoid-size or smaller creature, it may change into the shape of the victim” from dragonlance.fandom.com/wiki

The Kapak draconian

“Kapak Draconians are often considered the assassins of the draconian types; they use their venomous saliva to coat their weapons, which makes them perfect as assassins. Like their Copper Dragon parents, kapaks lure their targets into traps and use other means of gaining advantage over their foes. When killed, a kapak dissolves into a pool of acid. ” From dragonlance.fandom.com/wiki

The Bozak draconian

“Bozak Draconians are possibly the most magical of the draconian subraces, with the exception of their “enchanted” Aurak Draconian cousins. Created from the eggs of Bronze Dragons, bozaks are cruel warriors, only sparing a life when it is to their benefit. Bozaks explode when killed, injuring those unfortunate enough to be near them.

Bozak Draconians are larger and smarter than their cousins, the Baaz Draconians, and are large & burly, bred to be warriors from birth. They are the tallest of the Draconian race, and can be up to seven feet tall. Their wings are not good enough to allow them to fly, but they can use them to glide from great heights and to skim across the ground at fast speeds. The spells that Takhisis has granted them are martial in nature.” from dragonlance.fandom.com/wiki

Ed Mekeel, Dragonlance Nexus

I discovered Greenedera’s art through a Facebook group the Dragonlance Nexus hosts. The piece was clever and whimsical, but had a hardline fantasy feel making it perfect to be on the cover for the gaming book we were planning to release. After that, it made the most sense to commission art directly from Elena. Her work has passionate energy that made our book, Tasslehoff’s Pouches of Everything, more beautiful with the dozens of commissioned art pieces she created. I can’t recommend Elena enough! She is patient, great to work with, makes deadlines and her art…
