Legend of a sacrifice – Dragonlance fanart

Commission for a D&D Group playing in the Dragonlance fandom. Em and Varin are sharing a blanket, ready to face a great trial: Em is destined to sacrifice Varin with dragon-tooth daggers to fulfill a prophecy, despite their love.

Digital painting, 12800 pixels wide

Em” is a seasoned veteran, a champion ranger, Em is called “Shalewalker” by her people, after her choice to reside (alone) within dangerously remote shale-stone cliffside caves of the Khalkist Mountains. Still far from old age, her three centuries of life have been well-traveled and high-impact, and she came to be as familiar to the ogres of Blöde as to the lords of Palanthas. She is utilitarian, pragmatic, and stoic— some would say to a fault, though there is little protest for her harsh disposition from those she has delivered to freedom.
Varin” is born to a space between sheltered enslavement and some degree of privilege as the illegitimate daughter of a noble of Silvanost and an enslaved Kagonesti mother, Varin knew both the total absence of autonomy, freedom, and the stationed tolerance of diminished consequence. For half a century she dedicated herself to using the privileges from her paternal line to aid the underworld of Silvanost toward liberation, uprising, and reform-by-revolt: she is a member of an elite guild of rogues, specializing in the “redistribution of wealth and persons”, including and especially the exporting of those in need of sanctuary from Silvanost to safer places abroad. She wears a legendary custom artifact, a “pearl armor”.
Anguin”, the aquatic dragon – he’s a ghost, but still has interaction and guidance to provide after dying. His disposition toward the two elves is trust, friendship, and adoration: he loves them dearly, and has tried to be a suitable guide and mentor, at times protector, as he is aware of the destiny which awaits.
The Dreamer is a Monk of Majere who has been in a trance slumber for centuries, during which time he was imprisoned; he remained in his trance, with his god, throughout. He has since been rescued, and his eventual waking has significance in several intersecting prophecies.

Other notes:

  • There’s a stylized phoenix on the blanket, referencing the Cherokee.
  • They’re in the Kharolis Mountain region.
  • The commissioner’s crow is flying in the scene, since the Dungeon Master is there even if you don’t see them.
