Pirate town – Dragonlance Nexus

Illustration of the pirate city of Gyr (Dragonlance fandom). Commissioned by the Dragonlance Nexus as internal illustration for the adventure manual “The Journals of Kaz the Minotaur – The lost colony” featuring a novel by Richard Knaak and a D&D 5th ed adventure.

A free port, a pirate den. The city of Gyr is a mass of shacks, crudely elegant buildings, makeshift shelters but also impervious fortifications: the trebuchets on top of the fortress walls are ready and armed to defend the city from unwelcome visitors.

Work in progress: City of Gyr

I created the general sketch on photoshop, but then moved the painting on my smartphone (a Note9) so I could draw the details using the perspective grid of my drawing app – and also keep drawing even if, at the time, I was traveling abroad. Drawing on phone is not that good for the posture, but indeed is relaxing when you have idle time in places like airports and such. Makes me focus a little too much on details thanks to the easy zoom, but, well, I LOVE painting details. Then, when returned home, I moved on photoshop again to finish and render the scene.
