New art: Travelers of Avernus

“Travelers of Avernus,” my digital painting of a trio of characters crossing the Styx, the river of Avernus, in the Dungeons&Dragons universe. A commission for Winterhawk, for the 3rd book of the “Children of Hell” saga.

Bel, lord of Avernus and Fade, a drow matron, are crossing the river, while a skeletal boatman works the oar.

Fade stands at the bow of the small craft with a giant beside her. The diminutive drow elf looks up at her companion with a bit of wonder. He is a Huge Pit Fiend with wide wings tucked around his back to give her some room to see the ominous fortress coming into view upriver. His midsection is ripped open and hollow of organs. His ribs show in some places where a fallen angel struck him years ago leaving a wound that will not heal. He is Bel, Lord of the first plane of hell. Some call him the pretender because of his defeat of his former predecessor and lover, Zariel.

Work in progress

I created the colored sketch by drawing directly on my Cintiq graphics tablet in Photoshop. Then I felt the need to “bring out” the characters to better define them, so I created 3 A4 pencil sketches based on the digital drawing. Once I’d added the necessary adjustments and details to the three characters, I scanned the drawings and “brought” them into the digital painting, where they were then colored and adjusted.

Study sketch – Sleeping in the forest

Sometimes you see a photograph so beautiful, you want to make it your own. Save it on your phone, and maybe even draw it in your spare time.

A woman sleeping in a forest, some wild spirit finding refuge and home among the trees. I reproduced it on my phone, drawing it in my spare time during 2025. It’s not even “finished”, I just decided I’m done working on it.

In this case, I found the photo on Pinterest: unfortunately, I couldn’t find the name of the photographer or the model, and with a reverse image search I discovered that the photo is reposted on more or less appropriate sites—and for this reason, I have to avoid posting it myself. Also, artistic photography without high-necked, revealing clothing falls prey to digital regulators for inappropriate content. Fine. God forbid, then, someone posts a photo of an ancient Greek statue.

I’ll just hang this little study sketch on my digital wall.

Dragonary: Spring

“Spring,” my digital painting of… flowers, grass, ivy and a dragon long gone.

My contribution to the “Dragonary” challenge that artist Matthew Stawicki launched a few years ago, and which encourages me to create at least one dragon every January.

🌼 Spring always brings something. Maybe it’s not what’s past and gone… but something.

Work in progress

Started as a 20×30 cm pencil drawing, it became a ballpen drawing I worked on and off during 2025, and that I brought to digital media during january 2026. Redraw and color with a drawing app for SNote9, then phothoshop & Cintiq.

Sketch: Kotallo (+30 art process videos)

Fanart is a little star of creativity. I love looking at it, I love making it, even when it’s simple and just a small idea rather than a full-blown painting. Here’s a character from the video game Horizon Forbidden West.

Kotallo of the Tenakht, a warrior who overcame the loss of his arm and battled chronic pain. Here, in armor inspired by both the Tenakht and God of War, of which there are Easter eggs in the video game. And from Pikapeppa’s fanfictions on Ao3. A sketch started in December 2024 and was reworked in August 2025.

And… video dump

I’ve plucked up the courage to upload over 30 videos to YouTube about the creation of various paintings from 2022 to today—a lot of material I had on my computer that had yet to see the light of day. You’ll find them on my YouTube in the “Long Art Process Videos” playlist and then linked to the individual paintings’ pages.
And… there will be more.

New: “Raistlin – White Roses”

Blog post 18/06/2025

“Raistlin – White Roses” is my new digital painting. In occasion of Raistlin’s birthday, on 17 June 2025, I drew “something” about him as I did in the past years. A personal challenge, a reminder I should draw something for myself. Painted with Photoshop on Wacom Tablet and S Note 9. Raistlin Majere is a character from the “Dragonlance” books by M. Weis and T. Hickman; this is a work of fanart.

This time, for Raistlin’s birthday I asked myself: what would he love to do on his birthday? Well, why not gardening? He’s an expert herbalist, and he needs rose petals for his spells. The robes are black, the black moon is shining its black light. In the background we see the thorns of the Shoikan grove.

Here. Your Day of Life, Raistlin. Alone in the moonlight, focused on some not so happy thoughts, not smiling. Happiness is something you dont feel is part of your life – yet there are brief moments of serenity, buried among the bitter thoughts. White roses, as innocence lost under the crushing weight of life in an unjust world.

Work in progress

Trivia & Faq

Is this scene from the books?

No, it isn’t. It’s fanart, like many, many others. But remember, Raistlin is – other than a mage – a herbalist and healer since he was young. He would have a small garden even in Solace (I think Soulforge covers that). So, every gardener has to trim and tend flowes and herbs. So this scene, even if not specifically described in books (it’s just fanart) is about a black robed Raistlin, master of past and present, pruning roses – or collecting petals for his spells.

Are the white roses about Crysania?

Various users thought the white roses represented Crysania, and I love that interpretation as well; it’s a nice symbolism too, very poetic. Like the Good taking root in his heart, as Crysania hoped. Or the opposite, of course. Like, when Raistlin betrays Crysania in the Abyss, he somehow destroys every nice memory or feeling for her – that in his soul that could be represented as him, cutting away white roses from a secret garden. I find it beautiful that where I drew white roses for the lost innocence of young Raistlin, others saw much more facets of this complex character.

New artwork: time for unicorns

Dear readers, I present you two new unicorn paintings: a quiet one, and a fiery one.
💧 “Unicorn brook” is a solitary, melachonic unicorn. Dark patterns swirls on its coat, like runes or scars.
🔥”Fire Unicorn” is a creature made of flames. A unicorn, yes, but full of energy, rebellion, power. And with a very pissed off look.
One painted last spring, the other this winter. In between, an artistic block not yet completely overcome. I’m working on it.

Sketch – Elantris fanart: Raoden

Here for you (and for me) Prince Raoden from the book “Elantris,” by Brandon Sanderson. Fanart – fan+art – basically, what people want. Crave. I love a book, then I want to have something more, an illustration to celebrate the book, the character, to bring a scene to life as I imagined it.

Elantris” is a beautiful book by Brandon Sanderson. A nice story, an interesting setting, and then that “thing” – invisible to the eyes – leaving something good inside.

Well, he’s not in a good shape right now. Raoden was “cursed”, yet he found the strenght to smile. To follow a purpose – and here there was the “secret” to ignore pain, hunger and desperation, by focusing on something constructive, something you enjoy doing.

“We’re not dead just because our hearts stopped beating. We need to convince ourselves that we can go on. The Shaod isn’t causing all the pain here—I’ve seen people on the outside lose hope too, and their souls end up just as emaciated as those poor wretches in the square. If we can restore even a tiny bit of hope to these people, then their lives will improve drastically.” [Elantris]

I had a bad day, so I created this simple sketch for myself. A scene from the book – a smile and a welcome – and a reminder. Yes, you are having a bad day, Raoden is also having a horrible day, but he finds the strength to smile. Because he has a purpose, he has hope.
